Strategies for Curbing Drug Abuse as Perceived by In-School Adolescents in Kwara State

The study examined strategies for curbing drug abuse as perceived by in-school adolescents, Kwara State. Influence of age, gender, religion and level of education on respondents’ perception was examined. Descriptive survey was adopted. 403 respondents were selected through multistage sampling procedure. A validated questionnaire with reliability coefficient of 0.68 was used to collect data. Mean, rank order, t-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. Findings showed that strategies for curbing drug abuse were: school counselling, banning the sale of hard drugs, among other strategies. Gender, age, religion and level of education made no difference in the respondents’ perception. Recommendations were that counselling should be intensified in school and at home, among other recommendations.


Virtual Environment: Alternatives to Face-To-Face Teaching and Learning Mathematics in an Insecure Environment

Mathematics has been a driving force behind any development, scientifically, technologically, and economically. So, teaching and learning mathematics become as important as the subject itself. Unfortunately, despite the role mathematics plays in national development, insecurity challenges have destroyed teaching and learning in some parts of the Northeast and Northwest of the country. This led to the lockdown of schools in the areas affected, with children remaining at home. Hence, the need for a virtual environment as a substitute for the face-to-face classroom setting in an insecurity-prone area. The paper concluded that a virtual learning environment is a substitute for a traditional classroom setting and would help the country achieve its mathematical aspirations. The paper suggests that the Nigerian government should provide all the necessary infrastructure for the proper integration and implementation of virtual learning environments for sustainable mathematics teaching and learning in the country.


Impact of Process-Based Instruction on Performance of Students with Different Memory Capacity in Qualitative- Analysis of Secondary School Chemistry

Impact of Process-Based Instruction (PBI) on Performance of Secondary School Students with Different Memory Capacity was studied using quasi-experimental design. A sample of 96 students was used for the study. Qualitative Inorganic Analysis Performance and Memory Capacity Questionnaire with reliability coefficients of 0.86 and 0.76 were obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviations and ANCOVA at 0.05 α-level. Findings showed significant difference in performance between students experimental and control group (F (2, 93) = 56.45, P = 0.00). No significant difference between male and female students taught qualitative analysis using PBI, (F (2, 14) = 6.66, P = 0.22) and significant difference in performance between high memory capacity and low memory capacity students taught qualitative analysis using PBI, (F (2, 46) = 96.63, P = 0.00). Thus, PBI was recommended for the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary school.


Effective Integration of Multimedia Resources in Teaching Basic Science in Enugu State: Issues and Affordances

The study investigated the factors militating the effective integration of multimedia in teaching Basic science in Enugu State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. All thirty-two (32) basic science teachers from all the thirty-one (31) public secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area formed the sample for the study. A researcher-developed questionnaire with overall reliability coefficient of 0.97, determined using Cronbach Alpha technique, was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analysed using Frequency, percentage rating, mean and standard deviation. The results showed that most multimedia resources were not available in the schools and many factors including high cost of multimedia resources, hinder the effective integration of these resources in teaching basic science. From these findings, it was recommended among others that education stakeholders should provide multimedia facilities in schools and put measures in place to ensure that they are integrated in the learning process.


Influence of Parental Socioeconomic Status on Academic Achievement of Biology Students in Senior Secondary Schools in Enugu State

The study investigated the influence of parental socioeconomic status on academic achievement of senior secondary Biology students. The research design was an ex-post factor design. The study sample comprised 333 senior secondary two Biology students,who were chosen at random.The instrument used for data collection was a 40-item multiple choice question titled Biology Achievement Test (BAT). Mean and standard deviation were the statistical tool used for data analysis. Using analysis of variane(ANOVA) each hypothesis was tested at 0.5 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant influence of parental educational background on students’ academic achievement of SSII students in Bilogy while parental income, and parental occupation did not have significant influence. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that Government should take on the responsibility of improving the adult literacy programmes to educate and empower illiterate and semi-illiterate parents.


Impacts of the Performance Arts Enhanced Instructional Model on Secondary School Students’ Conceptual Understanding of Ecology and Attitudes Towards Science

The integration of the arts and sciences is a research agenda that is informing science teachers’ pedagogical practices. The study therefore designed drama, dance and music into a single instructional paradigm tagged “the Performance Arts Enhanced Instructional Model (PAEIM)” which was implemented during the learning of ecology concepts. This quasi-experimental research design study that incorporated gender and mental ability as moderator variables was conducted with 211 secondary school biology students. The Ecology Concept Test (ECT) and the modified Attitudes Towards Science Inventory (mATSI) were used to collect data on students’ conceptual understanding of ecology concepts and attitudes towards biology respectively. Empirical findings pinned the PAEIM as an effective instructional model that significantly improved students’ conceptual understanding of ecology and their general attitudes towards science. Further findings revealed significant interactions of treatment and gender, treatment and mental ability, and treatment, gender and mental ability on students’ attitudes towards science respectively. The implications of these findings were extensively discussed while the researchers called for the pedagogical training of science teachers to implement the PAEIM across multiple instructional contexts.


Exploring The Creative Skills Necessary for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Mathematics Teaching and Learning

The prospect of solving mathematical problems give room to explore the creative skills necessary for sustainable development in Anambra State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design and two research questions guided the study. A population of 89 (54 Urban and 35 Rural) mathematics teachers in Awka Education Zone was involved. A 20-Item questionnaire on Creative Skills use for Teaching and Learning of Secondary School Mathematics for Sustainable Development (QCSUTLSSMSD) and Questionnaire on Ways of Implementing Creative Skills in the Mathematics Classroom (QWICSMC)” was developed by the researchers and validated by three experts. Reliability index of 0.79 and 0.72 were obtained using Cronbach Alpha method. Research questions were answered by mean and standard deviation. Findings showed that problem solving skill, effective communication, skill constructive reasoning skill, computation skill, critical thinking skill, questioning skill, networking skill and project based learning skill were the creative skills for teaching and learning of secondary school mathematics for sustainable development. Use of practical, student - centred learning, idea creation, active participation and use of blended learning are the ways of implementing creative skills in the mathematics classrooms. It was recommended among others that students should participate actively in the mathematics activities.
