Differential Item Functioning and Item Dimensionality of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Multiple Choice Questions in Basic Science and Technology in Enugu State

Abstract
The study investigated the dimensionality and differential item functioning of Basic Education Certificate
Examination (BECE) multiple choice questions (MCQs) in Basic Science and Technology (BST) in Enugu State, Nigeria
using three-parameter logistic model. The study was guided by two research questions. A descriptive survey
research design was used. The study's population was 16, 962 JS 3 students. The sample size was 1,015.
Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used. The instrument used was 2022 BECE BSTMCQ. Data
used were from scored scripts of the sampled students. Research question 1 and 2 were answered using difR and
Normal Ogive Harmonic Analysis Robust Method (NOHARM) respectively. The results revealed that all the items
exhibited no significant Differential Item Functioning (DIF) by gender and that the test items were multidimensional
in nature. The study recommended that test developers should estimate the psychometric qualities of examinations
using IRT considering its adherent advantages over CTT.

Enhancing Physics Students' Achievement in Electromagnetism Through Cooperative Learning Strategy

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of cooperative instructional strategy on achievement of
physics students in electromagnetism. The population of the study comprised 539 Senior Secondary Students two
(SSII) studying physics. Sample consisted of 88 SSII students. The study adopted quasi-experimental research design.
Four research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The instrument used for data collection was
Electromagnetism Achievement Test (EAT) which was developed by the researchers and validated by experts. The
findings of the study revealed a significant difference in achievement of students in experimental group. The study
further revealed no significant interaction effect of treatment on gender. Therefore, it was concluded that cooperative
strategy has potential to enhance students' achievement in electromagnetism. The strategy built stronger teacher-
student, and student-student interaction during physics classroom instruction.

Appraisal of the Effect of Computer Simulation-Assisted Instruction on Pupils' Achievement in Basic Science in Enugu State, Nigeria

Abstract
The study investigated the efficacy of computer simulation instructional strategy in enhancing pupils' achievement
in basic science. A pre-test, posttest non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental research design was adopted
in the investigation. The study was guided by one research question and one corresponding hypothesis. The sample
of the study consisted of 202 participants (pupils) from the four integral classes that were utilized. The investigation
used pupils' Basic Science Achievement Test (PBSAT) for data collection. Employing the Kuder-Richardson formula
20, the PBSAT yielded an internal consistency reliability index of 0.87 while the temporal stability estimates of 0.91
were obtained using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The hypothesis was tested at a 0.05% probability level
using the Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA). The deployment of a Computer Simulation-Assisted Instructional
package in the form of Computer Based Learning (CBL) significantly (p < .050) improved the academic achievement
of pupils in basic science. The efficiency of the CBL in improving the achievement of pupils in Basic science was
retained during the follow-up measures. The study demonstrated Computer Simulation-Assisted Instructional
Package has significant and positive effect in improving pupils' achievement in basic science.

Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Mathematics Grade as a Predictor of Students' First Year Grade Point Average (GPA) in Three Science Courses of South-East Universities in Nigeria

Abstract
This study investigated senior school certificate examination grades in Mathematics as a predictor of first year GPA of
students in Medicine and Surgery, Civil Engineering and Microbiology programmes in Universities in South-East
Nigeria. The researchers used three research questions and three hypotheses for the study. The researchers adopted
simple linear correlational designs for the study. The study was carried out in state and federal universities in the
South–East geo-political zone of Nigeria. The researchers sampled 1200 (obtained using Taro Yamane formula)
students from a population of 4,300 undergraduate students using multi-stage stratified proportionate random
sampling. The instrument that was used for data collection was researchers-developed pro-forma. The internal
consistency (reliability index) was found to be 0.83. The data were analyzed using single regression technique at 0.05
level of significance. The findings revealed positive correlation between Senior Secondary Certificate Examination
(SSCE) Mathematics results and the Grade Point Average (GPA) of students in fields such as Medicine and Surgery,
Civil Engineering, and Microbiology. Also, SSCE Mathematics results can moderately predict the variance observed in
the GPA of students in these fields. The study concluded that SSCE Mathematics result as a significant predictive power
in determining the first-year GPA of students in southeast Nigeria pursuing these specific academic paths. The
researchers recommended among others that since SSCE Mathematics has high predictive validity index for the
students studying engineering it should continue to be used as a pre-requisite for admission into Nigeria Universities
to study Engineering.

Teaching of Geometry with Dynamic Geometry Software: Remedy to Students' Declining Interest in Mathematics

Abstract
Mathematics has been a subject of ultimate important because of its usefulness in life with Geometry being a
branch of it that provide greater insight for understanding the subject with practical experiences. The value of
this has not been observed in the students because of the state of their interest in it. Students' interest in
mathematics has been on the decline for years due to approaches employed its teaching especially geometry.
This has made researchers to search for ways to avert students' interest to the subject thereby developing
dynamic geometry software (DGS). Dynamic geometry software is a geometry instruction approach that help both
the teacher and the students to experiment with geometrical shapes to discover facts and proves about geometry
and mathematics in general. This can be a way forward to solve the problem of students in geometry and
mathematics as a whole.

Effects of Modern Teaching Approach on Academic Achievement in Mathematics Among Senior Secondary School Students in Gwagwalada Area Council Abuja, Nigeria

Abstract
The study investigated the effects of Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) on academic achievement in mathematics
among Senior Secondary School students in Gwagwalada Area Council Abuja Nigeria. The objective of the study
was to find out how effective is MTA in teaching of mathematics in senior secondary schools. Research design
used was quasi-experimental of pre-test and post-test. Population of the study comprised of all SS II students of
Government Secondary School in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja. The sample of 152 students, comprised 68
male and 84 female, were selected randomly from Government Secondary School Hajj Camp Gwagwalada, Abuja.
The instrument for data collection was Algebraic Fractions Achievement Test (AFAT) which was validated by the
experts in the Department of Science and Environmental Education, Mathematics unit and Measurement and
Evaluation in the Department of Educational Foundations all in the Faculty of Education, University of Abuja. The
reliability of the AFAT using the Cronbach Alpha technique yielded 0.88. Mean and standard deviation were used
to analyse research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05
level of significance. Result of the analysis revealed that there was significant difference in the mean achievement
scores of the students taught Algebraic Fractions using Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) and those taught using
the traditional method in favour of experimental group and there was no significant difference in the mean
achievement scores of male and female students taught Algebraic Fractions using MTA in Gwagwalada Area
Council public senior secondary schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the use
of Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) should be encouraged by mathematics teachers and other teachers in
secondary schools, Stakeholders in education should, from time to time, organise seminars and workshops on
Modern Teaching Approach (MTA) for teachers in order to meet with 21st century instructional delivery.

Effect of Annotated Drawings on Secondary School Students' Achievement and Retention in Digestive Systems

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of annotated drawings on academic achievement and retention of Biology students.
The study was conducted in Obollo-Afor education zone of Enugu state. The study was guided by two research
questions and two hypotheses. Quasi experimental research design was adopted. The population of the study
comprised of 2279 Senior Secondary School 2 students in the zone. The sample size for the study comprised of
seventy-eight (78) SS 2 Biology students, from four (4) intact SSS 2 classes. One instrument was used for data collection
– Biology achievement test. The reliability index of the instrument as determined using KR20 is 0.88. The experimental
procedure spanned six weeks and students were assigned to experimental and control groups. Data collected were
analysed using means, standard deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Results revealed the difference in
the mean achievement scores of students taught Biology using annotated drawing and those taught without
annotated drawing is significant in favour of students taught with annotated drawings; the difference in the mean
retention scores of students taught Biology using annotated drawing and those taught without annotated drawing is
significant, in favour of students taught with annotated drawing. Based on the findings, the study recommends among
other things that: Biology teachers should add annotations to all Biology diagrams they use to facilitate teaching and
learning in the classroom; educational policy makers should design policies that mandates teachers to use annotated
diagrams in the teaching and learning of contents in the Biology curriculum.

Use of Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics in Secondary Schools: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract
Flipped classroom is an instructional approach which uses technological tools to move direct instruction
outside of the classroom in order to make room for more interactive time inside the classroom. This
instructional approach, which wide spreads rapidly in the world, is not well recognized in Nigeria. The aim of
this paper was to review the use of flipped classroom instructional approach in teaching and learning of
mathematics in secondary schools: challenges and prospects. The paper discussed the models of flipped
classroom as well as some benefits of using flipped classroom instructional approach in a mathematics class.
It also highlighted on some technology of the flipped classroom, challenges to effective use of flipped
classroom technology in Nigeria and prospects of flipped classroom application in Nigeria. The
recommendations made include among others, that Mathematics teachers should be encouraged by the
government or school administrators through sponsorship, to produce video lessons recorded in playable
video compact disks (VCDs) used during Flipped classroom, teachers should be sensitized on availability of
some free open educational resources (OER) on the Internet that they can access and adopt while using
Flipped classroom instructional approach.

Effect of Demonstration Instructional Method on Achievement of Senior Secondary School Students with Different Learning Styles in Longitude and Latitude

Abstract
The study investigated the effect of Demonstration teaching method on the Mathematics achievement of
secondary school students with different learning styles in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra
State, Nigeria. A sample of 157 SSII students drawn from a population of 1,975 was used for the study. Two
research questions were raised and answered using mean and standard deviation while two hypotheses
formulated were tested using ANCOVA at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted Quasi-experimental pretest
posttest control group design. The instrument for data collection was of Demonstration-Learning Style
Mathematics Achievement Test (DLSMAT). A reliability index of 0.97 was obtained for DLSMAT. The Colin Rose
(1987) VAK learning style questionnaire was adapted and used to identify and group the students under three
learning styles categories (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic). The experimental group was taught using
Demonstration method while the control group was taught using lecture method. The findings of the study
revealed that the experimental group significantly scored higher in post-test than the control group. It was also
revealed that the students learning styles influenced their overall mean achievement scores. The students with
kinesthetic/tactile style were mostly favoured by the demonstration method.

Teachers' Problem-Solving Skills as Predictor of Senior Secondary Students' Self-Efficacy in Mathematics in Cross River State

Abstract
This study investigated teachers' problem-solving skills as predictor of senior secondary students' self-efficacy in
mathematics in Cross River State. To direct the investigation, two research questions and two null hypotheses were
developed. A correlational survey design was used in carrying out this study. The population of the study consisted of
all the 269 senior secondary three (SS 3) mathematics teachers and 13,653 senior secondary three (SS 3) students,
making a total of 13, 922 senior secondary three mathematics teachers and students in the 269 public secondary
schools in Cross River State that operate senior secondary. The sample size for the study consisted of 377 respondents
(16 male mathematics teachers, 16 female mathematics teachers, and 345 students). For the purpose of data analysis,
the average responses of students in each sampled school were used (32 average students' responses). The multi-
stage sampling procedure was used to draw the sample for this study. Rating Scale for Mathematics Teachers Problem
Solving Skills (RSMTPSS) and Students' Mathematics Self-Efficacy Rating Scale (SMSERS) were used for data collection.
The reliability coefficients of RSMTPSS and SMSERS were 0.81 and 0.87 respectively. Pearson Product Moment
Correlation was used to answer research questions, while all the hypotheses were tested using regression ANOVA (F-
ratio) at a 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated that there was a high positive predictive power between
teachers' problem-solving skills in learning mathematics, and students' self-efficacy in learning mathematics. Also,
mathematics teachers' problem-solving skills significantly predicted students' self-efficacy in learning some
mathematics-infused topics; male mathematics teachers' problem-solving skills predicted students' self-efficacy in
learning mathematics more than their female counterparts. It was recommended, among others, that more practical
opportunities be facilitated for mathematics teachers at education faculties to prepare them for 21st century students
and schools.

Analysing Ethical Principles for Machine Learning (ML) Techniques within the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Institution

Abstract
This study delves into the ethical implications of integrating machine learning into open and distance learning (ODL)
institutions. It scrutinizes ethical principles like fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, and bias mitigation in the
context of ODL's distinct challenges, including remote and asynchronous learning environments. Utilizing a systematic
review approach, it underscores the necessity of a proactive and ethical stance to ensure that machine learning technologies
not only enhance educational outcomes but also uphold values of fairness, transparency, and individual rights. Secondary
data from reputable databases yielded 400 papers, with 60 meeting inclusion criteria for thorough evaluation using
descriptive and inferential methods. The findings propose practical strategies and guidelines for ODL institutions to navigate
and mitigate ethical concerns associated with machine learning. Emphasizing collaborative efforts among educators,
technologists, and ethicists, the study advocates for the development of best practices and standards tailored to the unique
requirements of this educational setting.

Comparative Effects of Two Problem-Solving Models on Chemistry Students' Achievement in Mass-Volume Relationship in Secondary Schools

Abstract
The study investigated the comparative effects of Greeno and Selvaratnam-Frazer Problem-solving Models on
students' achievement in mass-volume relationships in Abak, Akwa Ibom State. Three research questions and three
hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design in a non-randomized pretest,
posttest setting. The study sample comprised 195 SS2 Chemistry students in public coeducational secondary schools
in the study area selected using simple random sampling technique. Instrument for gathering data for the study was
Achievement Test on Mass-Volume Relationships that measured students' achievement with a reliability index of .85.
The data obtained were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The result
showed that students taught using Selvaratnam-Frazer Problem-solving Model had the best achievement. Gender and
school location had no significant influence on students' achievement. Consequently, it was recommended, among
others, that curriculum planners should incorporate Selvaratnam-Frazer Problem-solving Model in the teaching of
chemistry.

Effects of Problem-Based Learning Strategy on Secondary School Mathematics Students' Academic Achievement in Ogun State, Nigeria

Abstract
This study looked into how secondary school pupils in Ogun State, Nigeria, performed academically in mathematics
when using a problem-based learning approach. A quasi-experimental pretest, posttest, and non-randomized control
group were employed in the study. The sample for this study consisted of eighty (80) Senior Secondary School One
(SSSI) students from two (2) public Senior Secondary Schools in Ogun-State, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area.
Multiple-stage sampling techniques were used to select the sample. The study was guided by two null hypotheses. An
instrument titled Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was used was used to obtain the data. The reliability
coefficient of MAT was determined to be 0.80 using the Split half method. The data was analyzed using an independent
t-test analysis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study's conclusions showed the effectiveness of improving students'
mathematics performance through PBL. Among other things, it was suggested that students be taught using Problem-
Based Learning strategies.

Information Communication Technology, Technological Proficiency and Financial Capability as Determinants of Students' Perception for E-Learning in the Tertiary Institutions in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract
This study examined Information Communication Technology (ICT), technological proficiency and financial capability
as determinants of students' perception for e-learning in the tertiary institutions of Oyo State. The study adopted
descriptive survey research design and a multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 610 students (283 males
and 327 females) from the population of 104,961 students from 29 tertiary institutions The 40-item instrument was
content, construct and face-validated while its reliability coefficient was established by Cronbach Alpha test as 0.8.
Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the four research questions at a decision mean of 2.50. Findings showed
that many students have positive attitudes towards e-learning, the state of ICT and the level of Students' technological
proficiency are high but low financial capability to procure ICT devices The study recommended that students should
be motivated to develop their ICT skills while government should give adequate funding for procurement of ICT
infrastructures.

Teachers' Utilization of Innovative Mathematics Instructional Materials: Prospects and Challenges

Abstract
It has been noted by experts and practitioners of education that instructional materials play important role in
enhancing the students' understanding ability during teaching and learning process. Instructional materials are those
equipment, instrument, tools or devices that the teachers use in the classroom for effective teaching of the learners.
These materials can undergo innovation due to changes and advancement in the practice of education as well as the
demands of the educational recipients in the society. Innovative instructional materials are those educational teaching
materials that have undergone changes, modifications, reproduction or totally newly invented with the introduction
of new exiting learning features capable of improving the quality of instruction. This paper deals with teacher's
utilization of innovative mathematics instructional materials in which it x-rayed the concept of teaching and answered
the question of who a teacher is, prospects of teachers' use of innovative instructional materials, challenges of
teachers' use of innovative instructional materials, importance and benefits of teachers' use of innovative
instructional materials as well as conclusion and the way forward.

Students' Attitude towards Mathematics as a Predictor of Performance in Mathematics

Abstract
Attitude towards mathematics is one of the variables influencing students' performance in mathematics. The
study adopted correlational research design to determine extent to which attitudes towards mathematics
predicts students' performance in mathematic. Population of the study was 234 National Diploma I students
at Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic Kazaure. Sample of 126 students who participated in the study was
obtained using Krejcie and Morgan table. Instruments for data collection were Students Attitude to
Mathematics Questionnaire (SAMQ) and Mathematics Performance Test (MPT). Reliability of .79 was
obtained for SAMQ using Cronbach's alpha while .84 was obtained for MPT using the split-half methods. Data
for the study was analyzed using multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. Findings reveals significant
relationship between students' attitude towards mathematics and their performance in mathematics also
attitude towards mathematics predict students' performance in mathematics. Study recommends
polytechnics authorities in encouraging students to develop positive attitude towards mathematics
considering it influence on their performance in mathematics and putting into consideration issues relating
to students' attitude formation.

Enhancing the Teaching of Oil Spillage Among Science Students in Marine Communities Using Animation-Video and Multimedia Text

Abstract
The study investigated the effect of animation-video and multimedia texts on Science students' academic
achievement of Oil spillage in secondary Schools in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. Three research question and three null hypotheses gave
direction to the study. The study sample comprised 120 students selected using simple random sampling
technique. Science Achievement Test on Oil spillage was used as instrument for data collection with a reliability
of 0.80 determined using Kuder-Richardson formular-20 (KR-20). Mean and Standard deviation was used to
answer research questions while analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis at.05 level of
significance. Findings showed a significant difference in achievement score of students taught using Animation-
video, Multimedia texts and charts. Gender had a significant influence when taught using animation-video but
showed a non-significant difference when taught using Multimedia Text and Chart. Findings on science students
with different ability levels using Animation-video, Multimedia texts and charts indicated a non-significant
difference. It was recommended among others that science teachers use animation-video and multimedia text as
instructional resources to enhance students' academic achievement in science.

Psychometric Analysis of Mathematics Multiple-Choice Items of National and State Common Entrance Examinations Using Pupils in Enugu Education Zone

Abstract
The study carried out a psychometric analysis of Mathematics multiple-choice items of National Common Entrance
Examination (NCEE) and Enugu State Common Entrance Examination (SCEE) using pupils in Enugu Education Zone,
Enugu State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 431 in fourteen (14) intact
classes from eight (8) primary schools were selected from the study area using cluster sampling technique. The
instruments for data collection were Mathematics Achievement Tests (MAT) of 2021 National and State Common
Entrance Examination. The data collected were analyzed using jMetrik, MS-Excel and SPSS software. Frequency count,
percentage and mean were the statistical tools used for interpreting the results. The findings of the study revealed
that a good number of multiple-choice items of Mathematics of both NCEE (70%) and SCEE (60%) have acceptable
difficulty indices while 65% and 80% of the Mathematics multiple-choice items of NCEE and SCEE respectively have
appropriate discrimination power. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that NECO should
change from 5-option to 4-option multiple-choice items since the additional number of distractors as revealed in this
study did not improve the psychometric properties of the items and NCEE showed high number of implausible
distractors.

Influence of Brain Dominance on Students' Academic Achievement and Interest in Biology in Secondary Schools in Uyo, Nigeria

Abstract
The study investigated the influence of brain dominance on students' academic achievement and interest in
Biology in secondary schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. Three research questions and hypotheses gave direction
to the study. A cross sectional survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample size of 118 students
from three co-educational secondary schools was selected for the study using purposive sampling technique.
Three instruments; Biology Achievement Test (BPT), Questionnaire on students' interest in Biology (SIBQ) and
Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) were used for data collection. The reliability indices for BPT, SIBQ
and HBDI were, 0.72, 0.82 and 0.70 respectively obtained using test retest method. Data generated from the
instruments were analyzed using Mean, Standard deviation, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results
showed there was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of the students' based on their Brain
dominance. Students who were Left Brain dominant performed significantly better than the Right and Whole
Brain dominant. Also, there was no significant difference in the mean performance scores of the students based
on their gender. However, there was a significant difference in the mean interest scores of the students based on
their brain dominance in favour of the females. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Biology teachers
should be trained on the importance of brain dominance to enable them implement better teaching methods to
enhance students' academic achievement.
