Theoretical and Empirical Comparison of Stratified and Cluster Sampling Schemes with Application to Mathematics Students Scores

In this paper, we carried out a theoretical and empirical comparison of stratified and cluster sampling. Estimates such as variance of stratified sampling, variance of proportional allocation due to stratification, variance of optimal allocation due to stratification, and variance of cluster sampling were used for the comparison. Two data sets consisting of Mathematics scores of students in College of Education Akamkpa, were employed for the empirical validation of the theoretical comparison and the result shows that the stratified sampling variances were smaller than the cluster sampling variances in both cases. Hence stratified sampling results in gain due to stratification and therefore adjudged to be more efficient in relation to cluster sampling. The paper concluded that the performances of stratified sampling over cluster sampling is mainly dependent on the structure of the population, and to enhance efficiency of cluster sampling, there should be many clusters with few elements in it.


Effect of Reciprocal Peer Tutoring Approach on Attitude of Secondary School Students’ Physics in Enugu Education Zone

The study investigated the effect of reciprocal peer tutoring approach on attitude of secondary school students Physics in Enugu Education Zone. A Pretest-Posttest non-equivalent control group of Quasi-Experimental design was adopted. The population for the study was 3,916 SS2 Physics students in the Zone. Purposive sampling was used to select two public schools comprising 113 students. The instrument for data collection was Physics Attitude Scale (PAS) validated by three experts and tested for reliability using Cronbach alpha with coefficients of 0.86. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and ANCOVA. The findings amongst others showed that students in reciprocal peer tutoring approach group had more attitude scores than their counterpart in conventional lecture method. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that physics teachers should adopt reciprocal peer tutoring approach in teaching.


Teachers’ Awareness and Utilisation of Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach in Secondary School Biology Teaching and Learning

The study examined challenges militating use of flipped classroom instructional approach in Biology teaching and learning using a descriptive survey research design. Population of the study comprised all Biology teachers in Nsukka Local Government Area, purposively sampled. A validated structured questionnaire was used to collect data. A reliability index of 0.85 of the instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha. Data were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, means and hypotheses tested using ANCOVA at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that mostly male Biology teachers are ignorant of the instructional approach. Major problems militating use of this approach are ignorance of the teachers, cost, time and epileptic power supply among others. Suggested solutions included organizing conferences and workshops for serving teachers, encouraging parents and teachers to provide online facilities for students among others. Recommendations were made for teachers to adopt the use of flipped classroom instructional approach for effective Biology teaching/learning.


Enhancing Students’ Academic Achievement in Stem Education Using Available Social Media Plaforms in the Post Covid 19 in Kogi State Nigeria

The paper examines how to enhance the students’ academic achievement in STEM Education using available social media platforms(SMP) in the post Covid 19 era in Kogi State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and was guided by two research questions and one null hypothesis. The population comprised all the NCE students and lecturers in public and private Collages of Education in Kogi State. A sample size of 1550 were selected using simple random sampling technique. A questionnaire with internal constituency of 0.84 calculated using Cronbach alpha was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test. The findings of the study revealed that students and lecturers use SMP for learning, socializing, discussing and facilitating academic activities among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that school management should provide Wifi and ICT facilities to students and lecturers to explore blended teaching and learning approach among others.


Effect of Thematic Learning Strategy on Senior Secondary School Students Academic Performance in Trigonometry in Adamawa State, Nigeria

This study investigated the effect of thematic learning strategy on senior secondary school students academic performance in trigonometry in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The study employs a pretest, posttest non-randomized control group design. The population consisted of 3,450 co-education Senior Secondary two (SSII) mathematics students of government-owned schools in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State. A total of 245 students in four intact classes formed the sample for the study. The four classes were randomly assigned to experimental (N=176) and control groups (N=69). The Trigonometry Performance Test (TPT) adapted from past questions of WASSCE (2016-2021) with a computed Kuder-Richardson formula 20 (K-R20) reliability coefficient was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results indicated that there was a significant effect of thematic learning strategy on the academic performance of mathematics students [F = 26.873 (df 1, 242); P<0.05]. Gender was not found to have a significant effect on students’ performance in Trigonometry Performance Test [F = 2.572, df (1,173); P> 0.05]. There was a statistically significant difference in the performance of low, moderate, and high-level scoring students when exposed to treatment [F =269.124, df (2,172); P<0.05]. It is therefore recommended that mathematics teachers, as well as pre-service mathematics teachers’ trainees, should be trained on the use of thematic learning strategy to improve students’ academic performance in Trigonometry and mathematics in general.


Effect of Three Modes of Reward on Private Secondary School Students’ Academic Achievement in Biology, Adamawa State, Nigeria

The study investigated the effect of three modes of reward on private secondary school students’ academic achievement in Biology in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study employed quasi experimental pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design. The study involved 223 SSII Biology students from four private schools in Yola education zone. The instrument used for data collection was a 50 items Biology Achievement Test (BAT). The reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained using Cronback Alpha. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed students’ rewarded with prizes (x=42.43, F=60.156, 0.000, partial eta=0,354). Praises (X=37.89, F=1.119, P=0.022, partial eta=0.10. clapping hands (x=39,56, F=6.406, P=0.013, partial eta=0.057 (42.43) achieved better than those rewarded with praises (37.89) and clapping (39.56) among others.


The Social Demand Approach of Education Planning in Nigeria: Limitations and the Way Forward

The interest and awareness of all nations in providing education for persons of school age is glaring. This may be the reason why from independence our national policy on education has always repeatedly used the clause that education is the right of every Nigerian irrespective of gender, social status, religion, ethnic background and any peculiar individual challenges. The drafters of the document must have considered the school of taught whose opinion is that education should be seen as a welfare or social service. This assertion was re-emphasized by the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Education for scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and World Bank sponsored World conference on education for all (WECFA) held in Jontien Thailand in march 5-9, 1990. Today, Nigerian has adopted the free education concept and thereby introduce the universal basic education program to provide education for its citizens. How well has the social demand approach of education planning worked in Nigeria? This paper examines the social demand approach of educational planning in Nigeria its limitation and the way forward toward making the approach better. The paper revealed that the underlying principles of the social demand approach is not strictly followed and recommends among others that government budget should be increased to 30% so as to provide total free education even to the poor and educationally deprived.


Access and Use of Internet Resources for Learning Among Biology Education Undergraduate Students

This study investigated access and use of internet resources for learning among undergraduate Biology students. Two research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was employed. Population of the study comprised biology education undergraduate students of UNN. Seventy-five, 300 level biology education students were purposely sampled. Instrument for data collection was ’Internet Resources for Teachings and Learning of Biology Concepts Questionnaire’ (IRTLBCQ) structured on a four-point rating scale. Research instrument was face-validated by three experts two from Biology unit and one from measurement and evaluation. Reliability coefficient of 0.72 of instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha technique. Research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. The findings show that students have inadequate access and use of internet resources. This implies that, there are limited access and use of internet resources. The study therefore, recommends provision of adequate internet resources by the University administration for effective science education learning.


Perceived Classroom Psychosocial Environment as Correlates of Students Interest in Senior Secondary School Geography in Orlu Education Zone 1 of Imo State, Nigeria.

This study investigated classroom psychosocial environment as perceived by Geography students of Orlu Education Zone 1 of Imo State and how it relates to their interest. Three research questions and a hypothesis guided the study. Correlational research design was adopted with a population of 5199 SS2 students. Proportionate stratified random technique was used to sample 358 students. Two instruments used for data collection were “Geography students’ perception of classroom psychosocial environment indices (GSPCPEI)”and “Geography students interest scale (GSIS)”. Mean and standard deviation; Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results showed a moderate relationship between classroom psychosocial environment and students’ interest in geography; based on the findings of the study, it is recommended for government to provide necessary equipments and conditions to create conducive learning environment.
